NNW Users to Trial Voice Over IP

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is an increasingly available, and in many ways attractive, technology for telephone traffic and will undoubtedly become a common feature in the coming years. Nexus Unity are one company who can provide this service.

At a recent workshop with a number of NNW users, Nexus Unity’s Nick Tiddy highlighted the benefits of IP Telephony. A small number of NNW users agreed to trial the service over the NNW network with many of them focussed on efficient use of network bandwidth whilst minimising user cost.

The solution to this uses Session Initiation Protocol to provide a secure private tunnel through Net North West and via the Nexus Unity network, out into the public telephone network. The user still makes and receives calls as normal using the telephone, however behind the scenes the technology which transmits the voice data allows significant cost savings in call and line rental charges. Calls made over multi site campus environments are free.

Nick Tiddy, who leads the trial, said “The opportunity to deliver tangible benefits to the users of Net North West was apparent from day one. Working with Wilf and his colleagues at the workshop, we quickly identified the benefits which educational bodies of all shapes and sizes could gain from using IP technology to deliver telephony services over the network. The benefits in terms of cost and technology follow hand in hand.”
