Power Failure Threatens NNW/JANET Connection
High winds and stormy weather threatened to bring down Net North West’s connection to SuperJANET5 in January 2007, when a power failure struck in Reynolds House at the University of Manchester.
The power failure affected NNW’s primary connection to Super JANET 5 and had the potential to cause major disruption to a whole host of users, as institutions were unable to connect to JANET via this point. This could have affected internet and email access, and the sharing of data and information between sites.
However, thanks to the fantastic resilience and structure of Net North West and SJ5, traffic was simply re directed over the network to the other SJ5 entry point, which is housed in Adelphi Building at the University of Central Lancashire. Users at the 100 sites which receive their JANET connectivity through Net North West continued to access the internet etc via JANET as normal and noticed no disruption to their connectivity.
